The College Now STEM Academy course will provide high school 10th & 11th grade students with an introduction to research methods used in the biological sciences. Students will understand how to develop hypothesis-driven research questions. Students will learn about statistical tools used to interpret data as well as how to present data based on experimental findings. To enhance critical thinking skills, students will study the art of reading genuine research articles based on testable hypotheses. In addition, students will learn to differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary literature sources. To develop communication skills, students will have an opportunity to deliver weekly journal club-like presentations. Finally, students will be introduced to the code ethics in research (honesty, accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity). Students will also have access to online to help with basic math skills (statistics, unit conversion, etc).

STEM Research Academy at LaGuardia Community College, a CUNY program for New York City high school students. Participants take an introductory biology course from January through May, learn the concepts and practice of scientific research, and earn three college credits. Students who complete the spring course may apply for a paid summer research placement working in a laboratory with a STEM faculty mentor and attend weekly science communication workshops. Students present their work at the AMNH August Symposium. The program runs six months and includes a $1,575 stipend.

Overall Class Average: 80+


75+ ELA regents or Average 80+ GPA in ENG/SS


70+ Math Regents or Average GPA of 75+ in Math


Must have successfully completed Algebra I; Algebra II completed or in progress


Living Environment Regents score: 80+

A one-page, typed essay introducing yourself, discussing your areas of interest in science, and explaining what you hope to gain from STEM Research Academy participation and what makes you a great candidate for the program.


Applicants will be invited to a brief interview with College Now staff.
