High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Science  & Engineering (HIRES)

Overview

The High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Science & Engineering (HIRES) is a 7-week summer program which offers high school students an opportunity to gain research experience focusing on remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). Students work closely with scientists in the field and labs, collect and analyze data, and are given the opportunity to present their hard work and research at a culminating poster symposium event.

Beginning in June, students are given the choice to participate in one of many projects related to climate change, atmosphere and weather, water resources or oceans and coastal waters. After choosing a project of interest, students attend courses for pre-college credits in computer analysis, GIS and Remote Sensing and perform hands-on research at The City University of New York (CUNY). Students prepare to present their research at the CREST STEM Summer Research Symposium in August.

The program commences with a reception in late June, followed by HIRES orientation and mini-courses through July. Students work closely with mentors and faculty during Research Training in July until August. It is required that students attend HIRES Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 10 am–5 pm to fulfill the three college credit requirements.
